Common Questions About Jewelry

Your jewelry is important to you. If it is damaged or broken, you want to make sure you choose the best, local jeweler to make the repairs. The following are commonly asked questions about jewelry.

What is the difference between costume and fine jewelry?

Even though it is beautiful, costume jewelry is not made of precious metals and does not contain real gemstones. Fine jewelry, on the other hand, is made from the highest grade of metal, such as gold, silver, and platinum. Fine jewelry will also have the highest quality of gemstones in terms of cut and clarity. If you have questions about jewelry in regard to the quality or value of jewelry, you should always speak to professional jewelers.

What is diamond color and clarity?

Questions about jewelry often have to do with the color and clarity of diamonds. All diamonds have some degree of color. It is extremely rare to find a diamond that has no color at all. Most diamonds have a light hue of yellow or pink. Clarity relates to how many flaws can be found within the diamond. If there are no blemishes or flaws, the diamond is of the highest quality. Minor blemishes and flaws can make the diamond unique, but they can also take away from its value.

What is diamond carat weight?

One of the most commonly asked questions about jewelry has to do with carat weight. Carats are used to determine the weight of a diamond. Carats are valued at 100 points. A ½ carat diamond is determined to be 50 points, ¼ carat would be 25. The higher the carat, the higher the overall value of the diamond.

What is a Diamond Certificate and how is it different from an appraisal?

Diamond Certificates are issued by a certified Gemological Laboratory and can often answer questions about jewelry and its quality. They are used to describe a loose diamond. The certificate states the grade and quality of the diamond at the time that it is issued. An appraisal is performed on diamonds (either loose or mounted), custom pendants, custom engagement rings, custom jewelry, wedding bands, or any other piece of jewelry or accessory that has value.

What is redesigned jewelry?

Redesigned jewelry is a piece of jewelry that is custom made from an existing piece. For example, a ring with two gemstones is brought in, taken apart, and used to create a new piece of jewelry. The same metal and gems can be used to make another ring or create a new pendant or earrings. If you have questions about jewelry and whether it can be used to create a new design, Les Olson Jewelers has the answers!

How do I care for my fine jewelry?

Questions about jewelry usually refer to cleaning jewelry properly. Your fine jewelry should be cleaned regularly. If you don’t feel comfortable performing the task yourself, take your pieces to a jeweler to have them professionally cleaned. They have the necessary tools and cleaning solutions to make your jewelry shine and ensure the pieces do not lose their luster. If you have questions about your jewelry or its maintenance, ask your jewelry for suggestions.
